The Scott brothers were born in the Scottish Borders region and were early settlers to Van Diemen's Land. Twenty years old Thomas arrived first in 1820 and after joining the Survey Department promptly acquired land in the Ross area. He named the property 'Mount Morriston' and needing a manager persuaded George to follow in 1822. James arrived in 1832 to learn surveying from Thomas.

Thomas returned to Scotland in 1836 and that is when the letters began. In the following 19 years James and George wrote 151 letters which have been transcribed and printed in this book. The letters contain considerable detail about Tasmania and it's people during that period and thus are valuable to anyone interested in history or family history.

The book also has many reproduced sketches and charts drawn by James as well as photographs of prominent people of that era. It is perfect bound, A4 in size, contains 442 pages and has an extensive index.
