In 1884 a 29 year old man came to
Australia in the S.S. Gulf of Carpentaria from High Wycombe, centre of the
chair making industry in the county of Buckinghamshire, England.
Anyone lucky enough to own a George Peddle chair can be
assured that if it is in good order it is worth four hundred dollars.
It is a collector's piece.
The chair has emerged as one of Tasmania's first
antiques made from local timber and though it grows increasingly sought
after in the market, the story of the maker has never been fully told.
Here it is.
