John Youl was a choirboy, a missionary, a
congregational minister and eventually an Anglican Chaplain! He was
taken prisoner by French privateers, by the Portuguese Navy and came close
to being eaten by cannibals. He grew up in
England but spent time in South America, Tahiti, Sydney and Tasmania.
In Tasmania he was an energetic and faithful parson as
well as a successful farmer. He was born in 1773 and died suddenly in
1827. His tombstone declares him to be 50 years of age at his death.
In actual fact he was approaching 54 years of age.
No one could ever say that his life was dreary or
uneventful, but while others have been given due recognition for their
contributions, John Youl, has for many years seen "the forgotten chaplain".
