Born in Searborough, England, Shirley Thomas spent most of her childhood in the Mediterranean before coming to Australia in 1954 to study at the University of Tasmania.  She graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in 1957.

Since 1961, Shirley has lived with her husband, Snow, and their family at North Down on the north west coast of Tasmania, combining life in the farm with a career in Further Education.

Shirley's book describes how a young Anglo-American family shared incredible danger and near starvation with the courageous people of the George Cross island of Malta during World War II.

At one stage, Malta was "the most heavily bombed place on earth".  The author should know, she was there!
